Meet Richard

Delivering Results for Our Community

I am a proud native of Birmingham, Alabama, a graduate of Parker High school, and an alum of Lawson State, where I earned an Associates Degree in History.  In 2010, as an employee of Birmingham City Schools, my fellow Birmingham American Federation of Teachers union members elected me President, a position I still hold today. In that role I have been chosen by National AFT to serve on the Racial Equity task force and have been honored not only as the youngest AFT President to ever present at the AFT National Convention, but also the first African American from a southern state. As a dedicated father of 4, my passion for civil rights and public education continues to be the driving force behind my successful leadership of the Birmingham Federation of Teachers and makes me a high-quality candidate to serve District 5.

Family is important to all of us! I am blessed to have married my childhood sweetheart on November 4, 2020. My beautiful wife, Taneka Franklin and our children are one of the many reasons that I decided to run for Birmingham City Council District 5. Raising our children in a safe city is very important to me. My family is my heart.

Crime is rampant in our city. As the father of teenagers and younger children, I am very concerned for their lives and well-being. Each morning I wake to hear about another shooting, murder, robbery, break in or act of violence in our city. It is time for us to fight for our city and our children. It is time that our city comes together to make our city safe. Birmingham can become a city of opportunity for our children and for our families.

You may ask why I am choosing to run now. My answer is simple: If not now, when. Our children need to see a change. Our children deserve a future. As your Council member for District 5, I will fight for all our children, all families and each neighborhood.

‘Together We Can’ make the changes for our neighborhoods. Help me fight for your family.
